1700's



Time Line

  • 1664- The name "New Jersey" was first used on a deed identifying New Jersey as a British Colony.

  • 1682- William Trent arrives from Scotland. Trent was a successful merchant in Philadelphia and very involved with public affairs. Trenton, was named after Wm. Trent (Trent Town).

  • 1719- The Township of Trenton is established, from sections of Hopewell and Maidenhead Townships.

  • 1719- The Colonial Governor declares Trenton as the "Shire Town", or county seat of Hunterton County.

  • 1730- The County Court House and Jail were constructed.

  • 1750- The Trenton Public Library was established.

  • 1759- The "Old Barracks" is constructed by the British to ally fears of the French invading Trenton during the French and Indian War.

  • 1776- George Washington and parts of the Continental Army cross the Delaware River on December 25th. On December 26th the battle of Trenton is fought, with Washington capturing the Old Barracks.

  • 1784- Trenton served as the capital of the United States for two months, due to a troop mutiny in Philadelphia.

  • 1787- New Jersey becomes the third State after ratifying the Constitution.

  • 1790- The worlds first Steamboat passenger service line is initiated between Trenton and Philadelphia.

  • 1792- Trenton is chartered as a city.

  • 1792- On December 29, 1792, the common council of Trenton passed an ordinance forming the Trenton Marshal's office and authorizing the hiring of 1 Marshal, 1 Constable and 1 Jailer. John Potts served as the first Marshal and his duties, as listed in the ordinance required him to "carry in his hand a small staff, or wand, similar to those usually carried by a sheriff," and he was to walk through the different parts of the city at least once a week hunting for idle and disorderly persons; also to enforce the laws relative to the prevention of swine running at large, which was against the dignity and peace of the community. David Wrighter held the posts of Constable and Jailer.

  • 1794- Trenton is named the capital of New Jersey and the first State House is built in Trenton

  • 1799- Trenton again serves as the capital for the United States, due the an outbreak of Yellow Fever in Philadelphia.
